Two Strand Twist Out for Hubby's Birthday!

Hello everyone!  I'm feeling very blessed to have some time to blog!  Last week I finished up my first semester of Grad classes and earned straight A's.  I did so well that my adviser is recommending me to do another independent study with a very well known gifted and talented author and teacher next semester.  She is currently writing four books and teaching!  Wow!

Christmas was a blast here in cold MN and even colder in ND.  Christmas day was -7 in ND and I was missing warm and balmy MN that was 9 degrees.  I feel very blessed to have wonderful friends and healthy family, but I need a vacation from my vacation.  Anyway, I haven't posted anything about hair in a while so here is my two strand twist out I did today for my hubby's birthday.
Dec.29, 2012 two strand twist out.
My hair is getting longer and I'm noticing that my hair grows faster in the summer and slower in the winter.  No complaints from me.  I'm just happy that my hair is healthy.  I could live without the fairy knots (single strand knots).  I looked back at my blog and saw that I haven't done a two strand twist out on my entire head since this past summer.  Below is a picture of the last two strand twist out.
June 12, 2012 two strand twist out.

As you can see my hair has grown a lot since June 2012.  When I pull the curls down in the front, my hair is now curling around my chin.  Almost ten inches now and I'm thrilled!

My birthday is in a couple of weeks and the hubby out did himself this time.  I'm huge on quality time with the ones I love and since I don't need or want for any material things the hubby arranged for me and 25 of our friends and family to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children on the Saturday before my birthday.  What better way than to pack food for hungry children all over the world for your birthday party!

On a different note, I'm considering flat ironing my hair for my birthday.  Of course my mother wants me to relax it again (NEVER happening again mom), but maybe a once a year thing during my birthday month .  I'm not sure yet.  Kinda scary to go this long with curls and then risk the possible damaging effects of flat ironing.  Pipe in and let me know what you think.  I respect my natural hair readers, just be nice.  Until next time...

Blessings!

  1. Jen, your hair looks great! I'm considering flat ironing mine for my next wash day. I've been a little hesitant because of the risk of heat damage also. I figured if it's 1 time and I'm careful, it may be fine. The first time I went natural, I used the hot comb every two weeks lol. But, I wasn't worried about heat damage. We'll see...

    1. When I was relaxed I use to blow dry my hair once a week and flat iron or use my curling iron almost everyday. I BURNED my hair so bad that it would just break off. I want to do it, but I don't want to ruin my hair.

  2. Such amazing growth and that twist out is gorgeous! I straighten my hair twice a year with lots of heat protectant and no problems. Best of luck!

    1. I'm thinking to flat ironing my hair once a year, maybe twice. Right now I just need to get the nerve up to do it.

  3. SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU BACK. I CAN SEE THAT YOUR HAIR GROWS AGAIN, CONGRATULATION. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW YOU LOOK AGAIN WITH STRAIGHT HAIR. AND IF YOU MISS THAT STYLE.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. GOD BLESS.

  5. Your hair looks gr-gr-gre-great! Wow JenJen! So, you know I have to ask you about the spot. I am hopeful that you've seen the growth that you hope you'd have by now. Fingers crossed!

No one can really tell you what to do with your hair. I will say that I'm thrilled that your armour is working well so that when you hear talk of relaxing your hair, you can keep it moving and not succumb to any external pressure. As far as flat ironing your hair goes, I can only encourage you to think deeply about the risks. Nothing may happen; your hair might be fine post the direct heat . . . or it might be effected. Who knows? The call is yours. There's no right or wrong if everything turns out fine, right?

I think about how my own daughter's hair responded to the heat I agreed to have put on it when she was a child. Her hair was gorgeous . . . absolutely gorgeous while straight . . . but it was never the same again. In fact, it slowly got straighter and straighter . . . and we were NOT once a year straighteners. Maybe once every three years. This, of course, was before we really knew that heat could have that outcome on hair. I do think the extra high heat (that we didn't know was that bad) had a lot to do with the destruction of her hair.

I'm sure your hair -- whatever you decide to do -- will look beautiful. Only you can decide whether the potential risks are worth it. Had I known that taking the bc would have done what it did to my hair, I would never have been talked into it. So, be clear, my advice is shrouded in fear of what might happen. Because after it is done, it is done. There is no returning the (current remaining) hair to its former glory. You've got to cut and start over. Ugh!

Your hair looks so wonderful . . . just be intentional about your decision. I'd hate to see you in regret mode.

    Good luck!

P.S -- Are you outside with no coat on in all that freeziness? You are much stronger than me for sure!!!

    1. The spot is surprising getting smaller. I gave Viviscal a 6 month trial and that spot has shrunk. I did take 2 pills a day for 6 months. Now, it is not completely filled in, but compared to last year much smaller. I plan to do a post about it once I get all my pictures together.

I was super scared about straightening my hair, so I decided to blow dry and use my curling iron. I have a professional grade flat iron that gets really hot and after thinking about the possible damage I thought who needs bone straight, I don't!

BTW, yes I was outside and yes it was freezing and no I am not stronger, just crazy. The sun was out (rare for this time of the year) and the snow looked so pretty, so I grabbed the camera and snapped some really quick shots.
